Please arrive early to allow time to find parking, find our building, get your tickets scanned, and to choose a seat once seating starts.
All seating is General seating. Lobby open at 6:30 PM and seating starts at 7:00 PM. Concessions will be sold.We will ask all patrons to fill in the seating of all rows next to other parties. We do not want to interrupt patrons or the performers with late seaters in the inner seats of rows.
We will be selling Standing Room tickets for $17 (plus fees) at the Box Office window for walk-ups only the night of the show starting at 5:30pm. Limited standing room available. On a first come, first serve basis.

A concert presentation of original poetry by Tim Seibles paired with compositions by bassist Chris Brydge.

Tim Seibles

Tim Seibles is the author of several poetry collections, including One Turn Around the Sun (Etruscan Press, 2017), Fast Animal (Etruscan Press, 2012), a finalist for the 2012 National Book Award; Buffalo Head Solos (Cleveland State University Press, 2004); and Body Moves (Corona Press, 1988).

In 2016 Seibles was selected as the poet laureate of Virginia. He has also received the Open Voice Award, the PEN Oakland/Josephine Miles Literary Award, and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown.

Chris Brydge

Chris is a freelance bassist, educator, composer and band leader who has been performing in and around the greater Tidewater area of Virginia since 1994.

For over 20 years, he has had the pleasure of being a member of the Virginia Symphony Jazz Orchestra, Roy Muth Big Band and Eddie Williams Quartet. You can also find Chris performing with his own ensembles, Left of Center, the Chris Brydge trio/ quartet, Liz Terrell Quartet and as part of the bass and voice duo Liz & Brydge.

Chris has shared the stage with many incredible performers, including: John Abercrombie, Frank Foster, John Goldsby, Carmen Bradford, Karrin Allyson, Rene Marie, Melanie Charles, Alan Parker, Taylor Barnett, John Toomey, Laura Martier, Stephanie Nakasian, Harris Simon, Lorna Luft, Debbie Boone, Shirley Jones, Bernadette Peters and many other international jazz and pop artists.

The Z presents the winner of the Proteus Music Contest: TA Gatling

The Proteus Festival Music Contest is for emerging and early-career musical artists. The contest is hosted in 3 stages: Submissions, Audience Voting & Finalist Selection, and the Finalist competition concert.

Submissions are reviewed by a selection committee and shared online for audience voting to choose 5 finalists. The audience favorite moves forward as a finalist and the selection committee chooses the remaining 4 finalists. The five finalists will then perform for a live audience at Proteus Festival, where the winner will be selected by a panel of music industry professionals. The grand prize is a featured spot in the Live at The Z Music Series and a recording package in The Z’s own Main Stage recording studio.

The audience-favorite TasteBreakers Music Contest is back in 2022 as the Proteus Festival Music Contest! The contest, featuring emerging and early-career musical artists, is hosted in 3 stages: Submissions, Audience Voting & Finalist Selection, and the Finalist competition concert.

The five finalists, including your audience favorite, will perform live in concert at Proteus Festival, where the winner will be selected by a panel of music industry professionals. The 2022 winner will headline a concert in the Live at The Z Music Series and win a recording package in The Z’s own recording studio! Play your part in picking the music stars of Proteus Festival 2022, then see them live in this dynamic concert hosted on our mainstage!

HEADLINER: JASON CALE

Blending New Orleans funk, blues rock, jazz fusion and R&B elements into a musical gumbo, The Jason Cale Band creates a style all its own. Full of heart and soul, the music is inspired, dynamic and tasty, reminiscent of the fearless musical offerings of the late 60’s and early 70’s. The band has performed both nationally and internationally, but will always call Hampton Roads “Home.”
