**Waitlist auditionees will be seen in the order of registration, time permitting, throughout the audition day. You must be on-site for your audition.**
  • Prepare a 2-minute monologue (can be sourced from plays, musicals, or film)
  • Prepare 16-32 bars of 1 song, be prepared (should you be asked) with another 16-32 bars of 2nd song; bring sheet music for both songs on printed paper for the accompanist. Note: singing will not be required if actor is not interested in VMT and other musical opportunities.
  • Prepare to tell us a bit about yourself
  • Bring 6 headshots with resumes securely attached to the back (no paper clips please) OR get new headshots on-site!
  • Sides may be provided at the time of audition for cold readings

Our annual Proteus Block Party is the biggest don’t-miss FREE event of the season showcasing music, comedy, theater, kid’s entertainment, open mics, and interactive art projects. We’ll have our doors open wide for the community to come see what The Z is all about-there’s no arts fest like Proteus!

PARTY LIKE A VIP: For $100 get a reserved seat on the terrace in the VIP lounge area, then enjoy dinner and a show with catered food and drink during the Block Party, and a ticket to the Proteus Music Contest at 8pm.

Proteus Festival Music Contest

The Proteus Festival Music Contest is for emerging and early-career musical artists. The contest is hosted in 3 stages: Submissions, Audience Voting & Finalist Selection, and the Finalist competition concert.

Submissions are reviewed by a selection committee and shared online for audience voting to choose 5 finalists. The audience favorite moves forward as a finalist and the selection committee chooses the remaining 4 finalists. The five finalists will then perform for a live audience at Proteus Festival, where the winner will be selected by a panel of music industry professionals. The grand prize is a featured spot in the Live at The Z Music Series and a recording package in The Z’s own Main Stage recording studio.

Submissions are accepted from Tuesday, August 16, 2022 to Tuesday, September 6, 2022

Audience voting will be online from Thurs, September 8, 2022 to Thurs, September 15, 2022

Finalists announced on Friday, September 16, 2022

Ballet Virginia’s season kicks off with a mix of contemporary and classical works. These performances will feature choreography by Lydia Roberts Coco, BV’s Artistic Director, as well as Dwight Rhoden, Co-Founder and Artistic Director of Complexions Contemporary Ballet. Mr. Rhoden was hailed as “one of the most sought-after choreographers” by the New York Times. Rhoden’s work, “Evermore” and Coco’s work “Bolero” are sure to delight. These wonderful and diverse artists will leave a lasting impression on the audience with their passion and artistry. Prepare to be thoroughly captivated!

Ballet Virginia’s winter performances bring a mix of contemporary and classical works with a focus on celebrating diversity. The weekend will engage festival-goers with live performance, interactive workshops and masterclasses, and networking opportunities.
