Main Stage Theater, Virtual

Proteus Festival is The Z’s annual celebration of creativity. In keeping with the festival’s namesake, Proteus, the festival’s form shifts slightly each year. This year we are soliciting submissions in music, theater and film for featured performers. Each category features production, performance, and/or exhibition during the festival for selected submissions, along with juried awards and audience favorite prizes.

Day by Day Schedule

The heart of Proteus Festival remains the creative teams, ad hoc groups of artists who form to create a new artistic work during the festival. These works derive from a prompt revealed on the first day of Proteus Festival (hint: this year’s prompt will come from Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes). Proteus Festival concludes with the creative team’s performances on the final day. Throughout the festival, the creative teams receive support from both The Z’s team and Lead Artists in the creative fields of theater, music, and film.

This year’s Proteus Festival will be extended in scope to ensure patron and performer safety. Proteus kicks off on September 26th and concludes on October 11th. Throughout, you’ll have the chance to catch world-premiere theater, brand-new indie films, and original music— both in-person and virtually.
