10-minute Plays for 19th Annual Festival of Lakeshore Players Theatre

Description: “Founded in 1953 in White Bear Lake, Lakeshore Players Theatre has continuously operated as a community theater. In April 2018, Lakeshore began a new era, operating year-round in the new Hanifl Performing Arts Center.”

Information/Guidelines:

1. The play should be approximately ten minutes in length. Plays over 15 minutes long will not be accepted.

2. The play must be unpublished and unproduced at the time of submission. (If you have had a past staged reading of the play, please let us know, as it can still be accepted, but no produced productions will be accepted.)

3. The play must have no more than five onstage (speaking or non-speaking) characters.

4. The play should have simple technical requirements. We only have about one minute in between plays to change scenes

5. We will not accept plays that propagate racist, sexist or ableist stereotypes. Plays with excessive offensive language, misogynistic throughlines, and extraneous violence or gore will be less likely to be accepted.

New Essay Publication: “Disconnected to Connect”

Artist Member Kendra Louka is published in “The Nuances of New-Age Feminism”, a new monthly journal from Musing Publications.

“In 2017, I wrote an essay after a much-needed yoga class. I dusted it off last year to share at The Word, a safe space event. The experience boosted my writing confidence along with the ability to be vulnerable. I’m happy to announce the essay will be published in the inaugural issue on October 8th.”

Proteus Festival is Back at The Z!

Virginia Beach Zeiders American Dream Theater (The Z) in Virginia Beach Town Center is bringing back its flagship Proteus Festival this fall, celebrating the talents and treasures of the local arts scene. 

New Plays Festival, Sept. 30-Oct. 1 & Oct. 6-7 at 7pm

Theater lovers can play a role in selecting the audience favorite winner of the 2022 New Plays Festival, featuring four new scripts performed in repertory. New works written in the American Dreamwrights Workshop are performed live on the studio theater stage, where audiences will rate their favorite shows to pick the winner. The 2022 Audience Favorite Play will receive an extended 2-weekend run at The Z this November. 

Proteus Music Contest, Oct. 8 at 8pm

Local musicians perform in the Proteus Music Contest, featuring emerging artists from the 757. Five finalists, including the audience favorite selected by a community vote, compete in a live concert contest to be crowned the winner by a panel of music industry professionals.The grand prize winner will be featured in a headlining concert in the Live at The Z Music Series and receive a recording package in The Z’s recording studio.

Creative Teams, Community Performances

Artists of all kinds can take the stage at Proteus 2022 in the Creative Teams contest. Teams work together to create a brand new piece of film, music or theatrical art based on a prompt, and will perform their new creation on the mainstage at The Z. In the past teams from local community theaters, bands, and other arts groups have taken part. There’s still time to form a team and create new art!

Proteus Block Party, Oct. 8 from 2-7pm, FREE

Bringing the event to a close is the Proteus Block Party, a free community event that celebrates the arts with a variety of experiences, performances, and activities for all ages to enjoy. Comedy, children’s theater, and music performances will take place on the outdoor stage, and a sampler of the open mic slate will perform musical theater, spoken word and acoustic songs. 

The Z is bringing its very own Virginia is for Lovers Love sign to the block party, with an interactive art project curated by local artist Renee Calway. The sign will be on display in Virginia Beach Town Center once complete.

The Hurrah Players Are Hiring!

The Hurrah Players based in Norfolk, Virginia presents family theatrical productions at TCC Roper, Sandler Center for the Performing Arts, Wells Theatre, Virginia Wesleyan University, as well as at the 140 capacity Perry Theatre located at The Hugh R. Copeland Center.

We seek a part-time Production Stage Manager to manage all aspects of day-to-day production, in order to ensure successful performances, across all The Hurrah Players, assigned spaces. This position also is responsible for facilities maintenance and rentals at The Hugh R. Copeland Center. This position works closely with the Artistic Director.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Advance technical production aspects of all productions at including sound, lights, video and crew/personnel requirements.
•Collaborate with hosting performing venues to ensure their production needs are planned for and accomplished within their means.
•Study technical riders, light plots, electrical requirements, and hanging plots as to the complexity and feasibility of hanging a road show or local production in the facility. Also, provide solutions that work to the benefit of the facility and the show.
•Maintain lighting plots, ground plains, elevations, and section drawings each venue
•Create production summaries, daily schedules and stage plots as needed for all assigned productions and bookings
•Rent production equipment as needed for productions and/or bookings
•Share in production management performance duty, including nights and weekends.
•Train and Supervise volunteer stagehands during performances, ensuring The Hurrah Players is adhering to both the venue contract and performance budget.
•Monitor show quality control, including adhering to house, sight lines, etc.
•Create labor and production cost estimates for performances, theatrical productions and special events with the General Manager
•Develop and maintain excellent working relationship with the artistic and production teams.
•Engage and recruit parent volunteers
•Assist General Manager in hiring of variable sound engineers and light designers/operators for performances.
•Hold parent cast information meetings in coordination with the Artistic Director
•Hold productions meetings for the entire production team regularly: costumes, set, lights, sound, director
•Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Minimum 5-7 years working with light, sound, and AV production in a convention center, arena, theater or road show environment
•Minimum 5 years management experience
•Demonstrated experience in stage management technical direction, scenery construction, sound reinforcement and lighting

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
•Must have strong working knowledge of facility management, equipment stage craft, theatrical production as well as a strong attention to details and ability to balance multiple projects simultaneously
•Must be able to read technical drawings, lighting/audio plots, and Ground + Rigging plans
•Demonstrated knowledge of modern digital and analog production sound, lighting and AV technologies
•Ability to call cues for productions
•Must have strong problem-solving skills and the ability to create solutions when there is a change in plans
•Ability to resolve disputes and manage workers in a consistent and fair manner.
•Proven leadership and project management ability in the performing arts
•Must pass a background check

The Z Mural: Open Submissions

It’s a new season at The Z-and we’re redecorating! The Instagram-able staircase is known across the VB area, and now we are looking to bring new art inside our doors. Get creative and submit to see your art in our building on our new “Z Mural”, located in our main lobby.

We are seeking creative ideas around the prompt: “Meet me at The Z”

Calling artists of all levels to submit your ideas now through Sept. 4! Enter to have your mural design featured at The Z, plus 2 tickets to performances of your choice.

The fine print:

  • Winning design will be selected by The Z staff and Board to be printed as a wall vinyl
  • Winning designer will work with The Z creative staff to finalize mural art for printing. Edits to design may be requested. 
  • Art may be submitted as a detailed creative idea, or complete graphic art in a png, pdf, or jpg format. Sketches and outlines will be accepted. 
  • Art will be displayed throughout the 22-23 season at all indoor events 
  • Designs must be submitted by 11:59pm on Sept. 4.
  • Designer will be credited on final art, and in digital marketing materials
