Award-Winning Film and Artist Event Welcomes 30 International Artists

CAPE CHARLES, VA- Experimental Film Virginia, a Virginia Commission of the Arts’ award-winning “Exemplary Program and Pinnacle Event” will hold its 10th annual festival from July 18th – July 30th 2022. The local film festival and artist residency takes place in Cape Charles on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

Experimental Film Virginia (EFV) is a hybrid design that focuses on the production of short films created on site during the residency with featured weekend events open to the public to attract art lovers and tourists. We bring the magic of dance into the world of cinema and tell our stories through movement for the big screen. We attract filmmakers, choreographers, visual artists, writers, actors, singers, musicians and dancers with opportunities for local talent as well. Several events are open to the public to encourage exchange, networking and creative collaboration with local talent.

EFV models the “Small Town. Big Art” mission of the non-profit Global Exchange Arts Roundtable, otherwise known as GEAR. EFV is looking forward to welcoming an international cohort of artists representing Italy, Israel, Taiwan, Ukraine, Germany, France, Canada, Russia, Norway, Czech Republic, Denmark, United Kingdom and the United States. Anyone interested in participating in a film is encouraged to attend the free workshops on July 19 and 20 from 5 pm to 6 pm at the Historic Palace Theatre, Cape Charles. All ages are welcome and encouraged to participate. No dance experience is necessary.

Featured events of Experimental Film Virginia 2022 include:

  • July 23: Art in a Barn: The lively Eastern Shore tradition of gathering in barns inspired Art in a Barn, an iconic evening of dance, music, community and good local food and drink that showcases the incredible talent of our resident artists. A perfect family event, we will feature live music by Guava Jam Band with a cash bar featuring local wines, mixed drinks and a slushy machine with alcoholic and non alcoholic treats.  The event will take place at Bluff Gardens, a private residence between two properties overlooking the Chesapeake Bay. The famous fried shrimp by the iconic restaurant, Steinhilbers will be coming to the Eastern Shore for Art in a Barn.

  • July 30: Reel & Raw: Experimental Film Virginia will proudly present the 2022 edition of short films on July 30, 2022. These twelve new films will be fresh off the editing room floor, created on location in and around Cape Charles during a two week intensive artist residency. Doors will open at 7 pm and the screening begins at 8 pm followed by a dance party, featuring the international musicians of iDox, a band formed by a group of musically-inclined ophthalmologists. Cash bar available throughout the event with food/snacks for sale.
