SUMMARY:Panel: Striking the Balance between Artistic & Work Life
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT WILL TAKE PLACE AT 8PM. \nHear from 3 artists who have been juggling this during their professional careers. Then dive in with your questions & thoughts in this interactive discussion with a network of creatives. \nMEET THE PANEL:  \n\nLINDSAY HORNE\n\n\nLindsay Horne refuses to confine her work to one media or expression\, working both onstage as a performer and off as a director\, and working in sustainable fashion and glass artistry at the Chrysler Glass Studio. Her recent installation called Ley Lines is currently a part of the Shine Exhibition at the CAN’s Offsite Gallery at City Center at Oyster Point in Newport News. Lindsay credits doing improv theater at the Push Comedy Theater as the impetus that led her on the path to creative pursuits\, and that her curiosity and passion has led her to her projects. At the heart of all her work is her belief that the communication between artist and audience is healing and transformative experience for all involved.\n\n\n \n\n\nEDWIN CASTILLO\n\n\nEdwin Castillo is co-founder of Core Theater Ensemble\, who have produced great work all over the region. Edwin is a director\, designer\, and performer who has recently directed Core’s production of Macbeth and performed in the Virginia Stage production of Pride and Prejudice and Core’s production of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow at the Z. Edwin has worked in Hampton Roads for years and has been successful in mounting and performing productions. What distinguishes Edwin and Core Theater Ensemble is that they answer only to themselves when it comes to the artistic direction and development of work.\n\n\n \n\n\nMANOLI KOUREMETIS\n\n\nManoli Kouremetis is a playwright who just can’t help himself from dabbling in writing short stories and poetry. Manoli is thankful for the Z\, who have had produced the staged reading of his first play\, The Rendezvous\, and the full-production premiere of his next play\, Saint Irene’s. His stories and poems have been published in the Southeast Review and Upstreet and the Chautauqua Review. His latest play\, The Light Underground\, was featured in the Zeiders Fringe Fest this past spring.\n\nFree with Z artist membership; $10 suggested donation for non-members \nArtist Member Events: The Z Artists and local art-lovers are invited to this series of interactive workshops\, Master Classes\, and social hours aimed at cultivating creativity and community! SUMMARY:Dustin Furlow & Friends Farewell Show
DESCRIPTION:Dustin Furlow is an award-winning singer/songwriter and solo-guitarist whose body of work reflects an influence of today’s modern-contemporary folk artists. With comparisons to Ray LaMontagne and Gregory Alan Isakov\, his voice is earthy and unique – conjuring subtle traces of soul and Americana. Furlow eventually carved out a sound that became distinguishable by it’s marriage of complex fingerstyle-guitar work and warm\, homespun lyrics. From the foot-tapping groove of “Cherokee Lake” to the haunting melodies in “Evergreen\,” Dustin is an ambassador of dynamic control on stage and continues to grow with each album. His fourth studio album release is now in production with Kim Person (Tommy Emmanuel\, Stephen Bennett). \nIn April 2021 Dustin was announced as the winner of Scottish luthier Taran Guitars’ “Young Player Bursary” award. \nIn February 2017\, he received the Veer Magazine Music Award for “Best Acoustic/Folk Artist” in the Southeastern Virginia area. That year he also recieved nominations for “Song of the Year” (The Garden)\, and “Album of the Year” (The Sound That You Call Home). \nIn 2016\, Furlow released the full-length “The Sound That You Call Home”\, which has enjoyed airplay on NPR radio’s “Acoustic Highway”\, “Hunter at Sunrise”\, and “Out of the Box” and recieved the title of “Album of the Year” by Barry Graham of NPR’s “Acoustic Highway”. \nA year later Furlow went on to release the EP “Solo”\, which was a live-in-studio project recorded by Rob Ulsh at Master Sound Studios (Justin Timberlake\, Depeche Mode\, Gwen Stefani) in Virginia Beach. SUMMARY:Proteus New Play Festival: The Truth Be Told
DESCRIPTION:by P.A.Wray\ndirected by Sharon Cook \nWhen Frances\, wife of General George Henry Thomas\, a strategic winning general in the Civil War\, finds out her now ailing and harassed husband has agreed to meet with a journalist with unknown motives\, her protective instincts and suspicions go into overdrive\, putting undue stress on her husband\, and a bill at risk for passing. A bill that would protect the right to vote for Black Freedmen in the South – something her husband had fought hard to protect but failed.\n——-\nThe Proteus New Plays Festival showcases community-driven staged readings of 4 scripts that have been developed in the Z Playwrights Lab or by Z Artist Members. The staged readings give the playwrights an opportunity to work with a director and a volunteer cast to see their script “on its feet” for the first time\, and add the most crucial element to developing a play\, The Audience! \n\nEach reading is presented twice during the 2 weeks of Proteus Festival. Audiences are given the opportunity to rate the plays via a survey focused on the elements writing an engaging script and story. Ratings are averaged to select the PNPF Audience Favorite. The Audience Favorite receives a workshop production 2-week run in November\, as the second Curtain Up! New Plays Series play of the 23-24 season.

SUMMARY:Proteus New Play Festival: The Lessons
DESCRIPTION:by Jennie Brown\nDirected by Patrick Mullins\, Asst. Director: Leila Stephanie \nCan truth prevail in the teaching of history to school children? Sixty-five years apart\, two Select Committees of the Virginia Textbook Commission face this question. In 1955\, a committee member challenges misinformation in a proposed Virginia history manuscript for elementary students. Fellow members are reluctant to stir up unrest in communities of color\, and with the state commission. In a 2020 meeting\, one member protests the racial equity embraced in a new manuscript of a middle-school text. The chair tries to protect the committee’s work while grappling with intimations of unrest and potential violence.\n——-\nThe Proteus New Plays Festival showcases community-driven staged readings of 4 scripts that have been developed in the Z Playwrights Lab or by Z Artist Members. SUMMARY:David Nygaard presents Out on Film: Hedwig and The Angry Inch
DESCRIPTION:Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a 2001 American musical comedy-drama film written for the screen and directed by John Cameron Mitchell and based on Mitchell’s and Stephen Trask’s 1998 stage musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch.\n \nThe film tells the story of the “internationally ignored” rock singer Hedwig Robinson and her search for stardom and love as she tours the country with her band. The music is steeped in the androgynous 1970s glam rock style of David Bowie (who co-produced the Los Angeles production of the show)\, as well as the work of John Lennon and early punk performers Lou Reed and Iggy Pop.\n \nThe film won the Best Director and Audience Awards at the Sundance Film Festival as well as Best Directorial Debut from the National Board of Review\, the Gotham Awards\, and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. Mitchell received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy and the Premiere magazine Performance of the Year Award.\n——————————————————————————————-\nAbout Out on Film\, Presented by David Nygaard\nJoin the Virginia Queer Film Festival and our local theater partners for Out on Film. \nPresented by David Nygaard\, a year-round schedule of full length LGBTQ+ films.
